LOOPHOLE TO HAPPINESS - A walk with the curators: Maja & Reuben Fowkes

The guided tour for Loophole to Happiness offers the possibility to hear about individual works, most of which were created especially for this exhibition, and to engage in discussion about the issues raised by the show, such as the existence of parallels between everyday resistance strategies under socialism and today, the condition of immaterial labour under post-Fordism compared to the socialist working ethic, and artistic strategies to reclaim happiness.

The exhibition is on view until 30th December, 2010.
The guided tour is in Hungarian. (sadly)

From California’s underground scenes and dicey juke joints, to big stages and international tours, Angel City Outcasts have come to be known as a unique and imaginative entity that continues to win over fans from all over the world. Design Terminal organises Budapest Design Week for the seventh time this year. The festival, present all around the Hungarian capital and targeting the profession and the wide public alike, takes place between 1st and 10th October.

In its exhibition to open at the end of January the Museum of Fine Arts will display selected masterpieces from the uniquely wealthy collection of the Pushkin Museum in Moscow. The fifty-five works in the exhibition provide an overview of French painting from the middle of the nineteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth. The show runs until the middle of April and will greet visitors with prominent works of Impressionism, Symbolism from the last decade of the nineteenth century, and the first avant-garde movements bearing the stamp of the Fauves and the Cubists. The period is conjured up through masterpieces by Courbet, Corot, Degas, Manet, Monet, Renoir, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, Cézanne, Matisse and Picasso and others.

The Glenn Brown exhibition brings together the largest selection of the works of this highly revered painter of his generation. Brown borrows from art history and popular culture, working from the images of Dalí, Auerbach, Rembrandt, science fiction illustrators and many others to investigate the languages of painting and how images are read by the viewer.

Brown is fascinated by how reproductions of paintings distort the qualities of their originals. Size, colour, surface texture and brushwork are elements by which original works are transformed from the familiar into the alien. Working from books or projecting reproductions onto a blank picture surface, Brown wildly embellishes his source material. Naturalistic colour becomes kitsch, figures are elongated or enlarged into the grotesque, while heavy impasto, although painstakingly copied, is rendered entirely flat. Often placing formal and aesthetic concerns over original subject matter and meaning, details from well-known works are isolated, manipulated, becoming subject matters themselves.

The Erik Sumo Band is a seven-piece combo that consists of two female singers, a percussionist, a drummer, bass and guitar players, and Erik himself on keyboards. The uppermost floor of Corvin department store and the huge rooftop terrace above is a significant location of the Budapest underground club scene of today. Its easy to find it, because its in the middle of Blaha Lujza square.From the left side of the building you can go up with elevator or by walk on a long stairway. If you take the elevator a kind boy will offer you little starter drink to buy, so the night can start before you step in to the place.

After Budapest lost the "best place ever" Kultiplex, got a new one, Dürer kert. Budapest biggest underground place is waiting everybody, who like electro, funk, jazz, reggae, ska, rock and hardcore music and concerts. Calm open air garden with stage, fast food from trailer-kitchen, and inside a chill area with "csocso" (table football), petanque, ping-pong, wifi, bar and 2 concert halls. The building was an old part of ELTE University, but now you dont feel the school atmosphere anymore.

To get there: Hop on trolley no 74/75 and take it to Zichy Géza street or ride the bus no. 7 to Cházár András and walk towards the City Park!

The Katona József Theatre is the best known Hungarian theatre company - a public theatre, supported mainly by the City of Budapest. Simon Stephens' play, Pornography is set in July 2005, when the london bombings happened. The author shows the few days between the Live 8 concert, the announcement that London had been awarded the Olympics and the July 7 bombings through everyday lives of several characters. These characters are common people whose disappointment of life draws a clear image of social problems. The terrorist himself appears, who is only a part of our everyday life, a member of our social system. Stephens' play, and the production of Merlin reveals how similar he is to us, ordinary people. The frustration, the disappointment, the monotonic weekdays and the repressed agression define all of our lives. Hence all stories of the characters are equal; they are only fragments in parallel of everyday life in a city.

Cycling is Chic

Even if it’s cold nasty and snowy outside, it’s never too early to get prepared to the spring cycling season. Maybe Budapest doesn’t seem to be the perfect city to get around by bike because of the narrow streets, lack of cycle roads and infrastucture and loads of other misfortunate details.
BUT. Nothing is more beautiful than have a ride on the Duna-side in a nice early spring day, or in the beatiful parks of the city.
Besides, it is a very quick, helthy, easy and most of all: free&fun way to get around.
Budapest has an extraordinary active cycling community trynig to the best they can. Our city has the biggest Critical Mass manifest in Europe, organised twice a year: 22nd of april, Earth day and 22nd of September, Carfree Day. Fiftyhousand people, children, grandparents, young&old happily biking around blocking the whole traffic is outrageous.

Wamp was been founded to make connection between the artists and the
people to reach the everyday art, and to create a forum to the
affordable special, actual and high standard of different creations of
fine arts.
The WAMPdesign market until today has grown to the one of the most
important cultural and design forum.
At summertime it takes place at Erzsébet place, at wintertime at Gödör Klub.

In the market beside filigrees, graphics, textile designers, ceramic
makers, glass and recycling artists, toy makers lot of famous
gallerias and illustrious and prized foreign and national artists can
represent themselves.
This feeling at the beginning was very much new thing, but later on it
has became a waited and welcomed monthly occasion, as it was growing.

The other purpose of supporting of the today's design is to became a
tool of shaping the publics style and to help Hungarian design
articles image and marketing.

The goal of the festival is to show the international design to the
professionals and the public and strengthen the international
communication, to help our designers to get in to the international

Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest

The Hungarian Royal Institute of Arts and Crafts opened its doors on November 14th 1880 with its first class, the carving workshop. The Institute belonged to the Hungarian Royal School of Model Drawing and Teacher Training – a predecessor of the University of Fine Arts – founded in 1870. The institution was placed into the (former) Music Academy’s building on Andrássy Avenue. In the 1880s and 90s, a number of new classes were added: model drawing, metalwork, wood engraving, decorative painting, copper engraving, and statuette sculpting and decorative sculpting. Starting from the academic year 1887/88, a 2-year preparatory course was added, thus extending the 3-year training program to 5- year.

Due to the growing number of students and broadening range of educational activities and after having moved several times, the institution finally received its worthy residence alongside the Museum of Arts and Crafts, in a palace designed by Ödön Lechner and Gyula Pártos. The school became an independent institution, performing successfully at public exhibitions, e.g. at the millennial exhibition of Hungary. The institution also achieved great success internationally, winning gold medals at the 1900 World Exhibition hosted in Paris and the 1902 World Exhibition in Turin, as well as a grand prize at the 1906 World Exhibition in Milan.

The school’s profile was further enhanced through the years; in the academic year of 1911/12, the 2+3- year system gave place to a 3-year high school course followed by a 2-year college program. The curriculum was further enriched with courses in literature, folk art, pedagogy, social and economic studies; furthermore, the institution opened its doors to female students as well. In 1914, the school journal, Decorative Art brought out its first issue, contributing to art education nationwide in the difficult years to come. During WWI, teachers and functionaries established a 100-bed military hospital within the school building, providing lessons in arts and crafts to blinded soldiers. Due to the new pedagogical concept under the regime of the Soviet Republic of Hungary, the educational system was radically changed, but after its downfall the former curriculum was reinstalled.

From 1924 to 1936, school affairs were managed by a team of 5 – a principle, elected every 2 years and 4 school council members. The 3+2 system was further extended, giving way to a 3-year undergraduate program followed by a 3-year graduate program. In 1936, the educational structure was modified to 2 years basic technical training, with individual design exercises only in the years that followed. During this period, the school’s workshop was expanded and modernized.

During WWII, teaching became impossible. After cleaning up the ruins, school education was relaunched with modified organizational conditions: in 1946, lower grades were detached, forming the new Szépmûves Lyceum. Higher grades became part of another new institution, the Academy of Arts and Crafts, with a 4-year curriculum and 6 specializations: interior design, ceramics, graphic design, textile design, sculpture and metal design. More than a decade after its petition, the school was finally awarded the title college in 1948.

Due to the growing number of students, in the Fall of 1954 part of the school moved to a building managed by Zoltán Farkasdy and his co-workers on Zugligeti Road. From the 1960s onwards, with a growing number of international sponsors, education was facilitated. The school became internationally acclaimed and due to its success, received the university rank in 1971.

In 1983, rector István Gergely launched a wide-scale reform in order to bring closer the aspects of education to the existing demands. The first two semesters provided undergraduate courses in general theory, drawing, design and material studies with creative exercises. After having passed an exam, students could choose between two majors. After graduating they could pursue their studies on a university level. In 1986, the school became the first state institution in Hungary to give a degree in management. In 1987, The Center for Visual Education was established to host courses in teacher training, functioning alongside the school’s exhibition hall, the Tölgyfa Gallery.

In 1993, the educational system acquired its present-day state, with the following departments: architecture, product design, silicate design, textile design and visual communication. Theoretical education, post-graduate art and environmental culture studies and courses in art and design management are still managed separately. On January 1st 2000, the school finally changed its name to Hungarian University of Arts and Design, adopting the title it had acclaimed 3 decades before. Post-graduate studies can be pursued in the Doctoral School. After its building had been demolished, the school gallery was moved to a new location, the PontON Gallery on Batthyány Street in 2004.

On March 1st 2006, the university took up the name of László Moholy-Nagy, an internationally celebrated Hungarian artist, changing its name to Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME).

The palette of courses offered has been enhanced over the years, currently encompassing space, object and image design. Due to its university-level education in all areas of visual art, the 129-year-old institution plays a significant role in the nation’s cultural life.

In 2006, photographer Gábor Kopek was elected rector of MOME.
